The software won’t stop working overnight, but what happens after that date is worth understanding now, not next fall.
What “end of support” really means
Office 2021 will keep opening after October 13. What disappears is everything behind the scenes: no more bug fixes, no more technical support, and — most importantly — no more security patches. Every new vulnerability discovered in Word, Excel or Outlook after that date simply stays open for attackers to use. That risk compounds every month you keep using it.
No paid extension this time
When Windows 10 support ended, Microsoft offered a paid program to buy a few more years of security updates. Office 2021 gets no such option. Once the date passes, that’s the end of the line — full stop. It also happens to land on the same day Windows 10’s extended consumer security program winds down, so a lot of businesses could be juggling two transitions at once.
Your options
There are two clean paths if you want to stay with Microsoft. The first is buying Office 2024, a one-time purchase supported into 2029. The second — and the one Microsoft is steering everyone toward — is Microsoft 365, a subscription that updates itself continuously and adds cloud storage and the newest features as they ship. For most small businesses, 365 is the simpler long-term answer.
There’s a compliance angle too. Many data-protection rules and cyber-insurance policies require you to run supported software. Keep using Office 2021 past the deadline and you could quietly fall out of compliance — on top of the security exposure.
The bottom line
No need to panic, but no reason to wait either. Audit which machines still run Office 2021, then budget the upgrade. Handling it now is far easier than scrambling in October when everyone else is doing the same thing.
